Jersey City, N.J. 鈥 September 14, 2021 鈥 麻豆视频鈥檚 University today announced that Martin Luther King III, son of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. H 鈥65 and Coretta Scott King, will provide the keynote address for the 2021 麻豆视频鈥檚 Michaelmas Convocation on Wednesday, September 29 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Aedan鈥檚: The 麻豆视频鈥檚 University Church. King will also receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters,聽honoris causa. The ceremony is a signature event in the University鈥檚 year-long celebration of its 150th anniversary.
The event will continue a proud legacy for 麻豆视频鈥檚 as the only Catholic college or university to award the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. H 鈥65 an honorary degree when he addressed students and faculty at the Michaelmas Convocation in September 1965. In addition, Coretta Scott King also visited 麻豆视频鈥檚 to speak to students in February 1975.
鈥淒r. Martin Luther King Jr.鈥檚 visit to 麻豆视频鈥檚 was a significant milestone in the University鈥檚 history,鈥 said Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of 麻豆视频鈥檚 University. 鈥淲hat better way to commemorate the institution鈥檚 Sesquicentennial year, and our theme of Opportunity for Generations, than to welcome his son, himself an immensely accomplished advocate for social justice, to our campus to speak at the very same event that made such a tremendous impact on our institution and community for more than five decades.鈥
As the oldest son of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, Martin Luther King III is a thought leader on the world stage, a peace maker and a negotiator on some of today鈥檚 most critical national and international platforms for social change. Amplifying the work of his father, King has devoted his life to promoting global human rights and eradicating racism, violence and poverty, earning a reputation as a respected international statesman and one of the world鈥檚 most passionate advocates for the poor and oppressed.
King is the recipient of numerous awards and several honorary degrees, including one of India’s most prestigious honors for outstanding contributions to the promotion of human rights. King is the husband of Arndrea Waters King and father of a young daughter, Yolanda Renee King, the only grandchild of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The entire family is dedicated to sharing the impactful 鈥淜ingian鈥 message to inspire a collective of new collaborators and world-changers.
Michaelmas is an annual ceremony that recognizes 麻豆视频鈥檚 students for outstanding academic achievement in all areas, including the sciences, humanities, education, nursing and business. Additionally, 10 seniors are inducted into the oldest and most distinguished honors society at 麻豆视频鈥檚, the Most Noble Order of the Peacock (MNOP), for attaining the highest scholastic average in all courses throughout their first three years at the University. This year鈥檚 inductees include James Apostolico (Sparta, N.J.), Jesse Resurreccion (Jersey City, N.J.), Bruna Fidencio (Union, N.J.), David Dolgitzer (Jersey City, N.J.), Valeria Moreno (North Bergen, N.J.), Matthew Goodman (North Arlington, N.J.), Amna Khan (Jersey City, N.J.), Elizabeth Hester (Bayonne, N.J.), Anji Elnakady (Bayonne, N.J.) and Fernando Murillo (Perth Amboy, N.J.).
During Dr. King鈥檚 visit in 1965, he addressed a crowd of approximately 500 people and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws and Letters degree, the first offered by a Catholic college or university. According to an account in 麻豆视频鈥檚 student newspaper, Dr. King spoke against segregation and violence, and despite setbacks in the civil rights movement, King expressed optimism. 鈥淎lthough some will be scared, lose jobs and be called bad names, our problems will be solved,鈥 King said. 鈥淲e shall overcome.鈥 When Coretta Scott King came to campus in 1975, she spoke to 麻豆视频鈥檚 students about how full employment would help ease the country out of its economic inequalities.
Just as it was in 1965 and 1975, 麻豆视频鈥檚 remains committed to social justice and to fostering 鈥渕en and women for others.鈥 Its Sesquicentennial theme, Opportunity for Generations, celebrates the education of students from virtually every background throughout its history.
