In his talk, \u201cReading Poetry, Poetry Reading,\u201d Hirsch shared his thoughts on the bonds poetry creates between people and inspired the audience with his personal anecdotes and poetry.<\/p>\n<p>An accomplished poet, Hirsch is the winner of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, an Academy of Arts and Letters Award and was named a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, among numerous other honors. He currently serves as the president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He has published several books of poetry and criticism and he wrote the long running column \u201cPoets Choice\u201d in the <em>Washington Post.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For the first half of the event, Hirsch sat down with Judith Valente-Reynard to discuss his thoughts on poetry. She started the conversation with the inquiry, \u201cWhy does poetry matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoetry speaks to our interior lives better than anything else,\u201d said Hirsch. \u201cPoetry uses language in a way that does not throw it away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valente-Reynard continued with the prompt, \u201cHow does poetry relate to prayer?\u201d Hirsch responded that poems are unauthorized testimony that come with the authority of experience.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5943\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5943\" class=\"wp-image-5943\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2017\/05\/Hirsch-4-786x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2017\/05\/Hirsch-4-786x1024.jpg 786w, https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2017\/05\/Hirsch-4-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2017\/05\/Hirsch-4-768x1001.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2017\/05\/Hirsch-4-92x120.jpg 92w, https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/230\/files\/2017\/05\/Hirsch-4.jpg 1768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edward Hirsch Reads<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cPoetry is not meant for the transcendent; it is meant for the reader,\u201d he said and explained that poetry creates a one-to-one relationship between the reader and the poem, making it a spiritual connection between two people.<\/p>\n<p>When prompted to summarize his book, <em>How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry, <\/em>Hirsch said that the poem teaches the reader how to read it. \u201cThe experience of the poem gives you a form.\u201d He then narrated his theory on sonnets, which were originally poems written by lawyers about erotic love. A sonnet is irrational subject matter put into a rational form.<\/p>\n<p>Having earned a Ph.D. in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania and showing appreciation for poets from Russia, China and Turkey, his poetry contains many subtle secrets and references. In addition, the poems have a strong sense of place and are sprinkled with anecdotes from his life.
