Jersey City, N.J. \u2013 February 12, 2015 \u2013<\/strong> Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s University, was officially elected to serve a three-year term on the board of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU). NAICU serves as the unified national voice of private nonprofit higher education. Eight new members were elected to the board this year to represent the association\u2019s eight national regions. Dr. Cornacchia will represent Region II, which includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey and New York.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrivate higher education today faces an unprecedented combination of challenges including the deepening role of the federal government, tightening fiscal constraints, rapidly changing student demographics, technological innovation and globalization,\u201d said NAICU President David L. Warren, Ph.D. \u201cThe experience and leadership of Eugene Cornacchia and the other new NAICU board members will be critical in the years ahead as the association and our members navigate this time of change and challenge for American higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n

NAICU is the national public policy association for the nation\u2019s private, non-profit colleges and universities. With more than 1,000 member institutions and associations nationwide, NAICU reflects the diversity of independent higher education in the United States. Since 1976, the association has represented private nonprofit colleges and universities on policy issues with the federal government, such as those affecting student aid, taxation and government regulation. Member institutions include major research universities, church-related colleges, historically black colleges, art and design colleges, traditional liberal arts and science institutions, women\u2019s colleges, two-year colleges, and schools of law, medicine, engineering, business, and other professions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am honored to have been chosen to serve on the board for an esteemed organization like NAICU,\u201d said Dr. Cornacchia. \u201cAs the higher education landscape continues to evolve, it is critical for leaders in the field to come together to promote the value that independent colleges and universities have to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The additional college and university presidents who were named to the board this year include: Steven DiSalvo, Ph.D., president of Saint Anslem College; James Hurley, Ed.D., president of the University of Pikesville; Leo Lambert, Ph.D., president of Elon University; Dottie King, Ph.D., president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College; H. James Williams, Ph.D., C.MA., J.D., LL.M., president of Fisk University; Frederik Ohles, Ph.D., president of Nebraska Wesleyan University; and Andrew Benton, Ph.D., president of Pepperdine University.<\/p>\n
