{"id":3657,"date":"2014-07-16T15:45:38","date_gmt":"2014-07-16T19:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/news\/?p=3657"},"modified":"2014-07-16T15:45:38","modified_gmt":"2014-07-16T19:45:38","slug":"big-data-expert-to-lead-masters-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/news\/2014\/07\/16\/big-data-expert-to-lead-masters-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Data Expert to Lead Master&#8217;s Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Jersey City, N.J.<\/strong><strong> \u2013 July 16, 2014 \u2013<\/strong> Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s University today announced the appointment of Sylvain Jaume, Ph.D., as director of the master\u2019s program in data science with a concentration in business analytics at Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s University. Jaume has extensive experience in academic and industrial research in electrical engineering, computer science and data science as well as in program management and curriculum development. The Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s data science degree program is the first of its kind in the N.Y.\/N.J. area and classes will be offered beginning in the fall of 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have high aspirations for our cutting-edge program in data science,\u201d said Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s University. \u201cWe are working with a number of industry partners on our curriculum and we believe Dr. Jaume will serve as a tremendous asset as we move forward with the launch of the program this fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s, Jaume was the director of interdisciplinary engineering at the Wentworth Institute of Technology. He taught subjects in engineering and computer science and established many international collaborations. During his career he developed large data analysis and medical imaging technologies, which are used in hospitals and in collaboration with the Intel Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s world, data is becoming a larger part of the strategic planning process in a wide-variety of industries,\u201d said Jaume. \u201cThe growing importance of big data is what makes the data science program at Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s even more relevant and my vision is to establish international recognition for this valuable program. I am very excited to join the community at the University and I look forward to working with everyone on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jaume earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Universite Catholique de Louvain. He was a research fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School. He is the author of many research publications and is the recipient of awards for academic achievement.<\/p>\n<p>The master\u2019s program in data science at Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s University integrates computer science, statistics and data-based business management principles to inform data driven decision making. The program was developed to align with the \u201cbest of industry applied practice\u201d in big data solutions.
