Jersey City, N.J. \u2013 March 20, 2014 \u2013<\/strong> The Board of Trustees of Notre Dame of Maryland University today announced the appointment of Marylou Yam, Ph.D., current provost and vice president for academic affairs at Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s University, to president of Notre Dame of Maryland University, effective July 1, 2014. She will become the institution\u2019s 14th president in its 119-year history.<\/p>\n

Dr. Yam is the latest in a long line of Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s University executive officers or academic vice presidents chosen to lead a university, including, most recently, current University President Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., George E. Martin, Ph.D. (St. Edward\u2019s University), and Frank Mertz, Ph.D. (Fairleigh Dickinson University).\u00a0She has served the Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s University community for 25 years in a variety of ways. Dr. Yam joined Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s as an instructor in the nursing department and went on to become director of the Master of Science in nursing program and in 2000, the chairperson of the nursing department. A year later, she was named associate dean of nursing and was promoted to full professor in 2004. In 2006, she was appointed academic dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and School of Business Administration and in 2008, vice president for academic affairs. She was named provost and vice president for academic affairs in 2010.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Yam has been an esteemed and valued colleague and I have absolute confidence in her ability to lead the Notre Dame University of Maryland community,\u201d said Dr. Cornacchia. \u201cHer countless contributions to Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s will be realized for years to come. I look forward to continuing to work with her, now as a fellow university president, to advance the mission of Catholic higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under Dr. Yam\u2019s leadership, the University experienced significant program expansion including the introduction of the first doctoral programs in nursing and education as well as Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s first fully online program in nursing.<\/p>\n

She effectively led many initiatives such as the effort to help establish the Schools of Nursing and Education as well as the Center for Global Learning. In addition, Dr. Yam worked with colleagues on several faculty development initiatives, a TITLE V grant and the Building Our Future Bond Act application, which led to funding for the renovation of Dinneen Hall for the School of Business, to name just a few of her many accomplishments. She also helped to set the stage for the successful transition to University status.<\/p>\n

Dr. Yam earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1981 from Mercy College and her M.A. and Ed. M. degrees in Nursing Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 1993, she earned her Ph.D. from Adelphi University. In 2002, she was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n
