OLYMPIC GREAT OTIS DAVIS WILL SPEAK AT SAINT PETER\u2019S COLLEGE <\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/P> October 9, 2002<\/EM>— Jersey City, NJ – Otis Smith, a 1960 Olympics double gold medal-winner, will speak at Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s College on Friday, October 11 as a guest of Professor Harvey Zucker\u2019s News Writing course. Smith will speak at 12:30 and 2 p.m. in Room 210 of McDermott Hall on the College\u2019s Jersey City campus. <\/FONT><\/P> Smith, who set collegiate records at the University of Oregon, won the 400-meters in the Rome Olympic Games with a world record time of 44.9 seconds. He was the first to break 45 seconds in the event and later helped the United States capture gold in the 4 x 400 meter relay. Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s College is the Jesuit College of New Jersey. Founded in 1872, Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s has an enrollment of more than 3,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located in Jersey City and a branch campus, specializing in adult education, is located in Englewood Cliffs. Smith currently runs Safe Haven, an after-school sports program for children ages 8-12, for the Union City (NJ) Board of Education. He is also founded the Tri-State Olympic Alumni Association and was selected to participate in the United States Olympic Committees Project Gold 2000, an initiative to increase involvement of minorities and women in Olympic governance. Smith is a member of the University of Oregon, State of Oregon, and New Jersey Sports Writers’ Halls of Fame. <\/FONT><\/P>
