Sometimes it might make more sense for you to learn globally for a few weeks, rather than for a full semester or academic year. If you\u2019re looking for a short-term way to gain cross-cultural insights, a faculty-led travel course could be an ideal option for you. It\u2019s the perfect way to combine classroom learning in Â鶹ÊÓƵ\u2019s with experiential learning around the world.<\/p>\n

Students can travel overseas and earn credit with a Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s faculty member over winter or spring break. Look for courses with the INTL designation in Class Search, Spirit Online. AN-362 INTL (People, Culture, & Society), China - Dr. Lan Jiang<\/b><\/p>\n

Â鶹ÊÓƵ's is excited to announce an incredible opportunity for students to participate in a trip to China through the China-US Youth Cultural Exchange Program. This immersive experience, sponsored by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and brought to you by Dr. Lan Jiang of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literature, will take place in Mainland China approximately from December 18, 2024 to January 1, 2025, offering students the chance to engage with Chinese culture, explore significant cultural landmarks, and participate in academic exchanges.<\/span><\/p>\n

BI-489 INTL (Ecology in Costa Rica), Costa Rica - Dr. Brandy Garrett-Kluthe<\/b><\/p>\n

The course, as BI-489 or EV-489, counts as an elective course for the Biology major\/minor and or the Environmental Studies major\/minor. The course is open to students in other majors as well, for whom it will count toward the core requirement of three credits of natural science. Take a trip to explore the luscious greenery and environmental prowess in the Latin American nation of Costa Rica.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BA-421\/GB-697 ITNL(Doing Business Overseas), Spain & France - Dr. Chanaz Gargouri<\/b><\/p>\n

This course is designed to expose students to the European business environments and assist participants to develop a practical understanding of the core issues that influence business decision-making in Spain and France. The course will include a guided individual research (SPU Library), lectures (about Europe), company visits, social and cultural activities. The focus is on a total learning experience designed to prepare the student for the real world of US-Europe business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CJ-298 INTL (Special Topics, South Korea), South Korea - Dr. Hyuongah Park<\/b><\/p>\n

This class includes travel to broaden the understanding of the global criminal justice system through understanding the Korean criminal justice system and a comparison with the U.S. criminal justice system. Students will have the opportunity to organize and report the information obtained from the places visited during the trip and report the characteristics of the Korean criminal justice system compared with the U.S. criminal justice system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CJ-398 INTL (Spain and Portugal Criminal Justice Systems), Spain & Portugal - Dr. Brian Royster<\/b><\/p>\n

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive interdisciplinary understanding of the justice systems and institutions in Spain and Portugal. The primary emphasis is on the history and development of the two major national systems of Administrative Justice Model with the American Common Law Model. The course includes the study of the police organizations, the courts, the criminal sentencing process and rehabilitative institutions, and their respective jurisdictions. Analysis of the structure and process within various theoretical frameworks is incorporated into all phases of the course. Special attention is paid to the processes of adjudication and supervision of the offender in the community. Students will learn from classroom discussions, textbook review and field study in Spain and Portugal. As a result of the field experience the student will see the Spain and Portugal systems in action and be able to compare the Administrative Justice Model with the American Common Law Model. A greater understanding of how law developed in Europe and why its adaption is different from the American model but effective in Spain and Portugal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

EL-298 INTL (Literary Travels: Visions of Italy), Italy - Dr. Rachel Wifall and Dr. Constance Wagner<\/b><\/p>\n

In this course, we will consider the influence of Italy and Italian culture on English and American literature. We will analyze a selection of poems, plays, novellas, and novels from various historical eras, while considering the lives and times of their creators, and will view and analyze some stage and film adaptations of them, too. Then, over the spring break (March 1-8), we will visit the sites of their inspiration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GS-298-INTL1\u2014(Libert\u00e9, \u00c9galit\u00e9, Sororit\u00e9: A global exchange on gender equality in Brussels and Amsterdam) - Dr. Beth Adubato<\/b><\/p>\n

  1. Students who participate in and complete the course will:<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Identify the overarching problems associated with gender inequality.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Consider the United Nations\u2019 plans for gender equality (Goal #5) under their \u201cSustainable Development Goals.\u201d<\/li>\n
  4. Discover the mission of the UN Commission on the Status of Women.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Increase awareness of the global policy community, including the relationship and the importance of \u201ctransatlantic relations\u201d for the future of the world economy, climate security, and of course, human rights.<\/li>\n
  6. Navigate in a foreign environment and assimilate to foreign cultures.<\/li>\n
  7. Meet the woman who wrote Belgium\u2019s \u201cGender Mainstreaming Law\u201d and discuss its applications.<\/li>\n
  8. Compare anti-violence campaigns on college campuses\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Become familiar with the European Commission, European Parliament, and the European Women\u2019s Lobby.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Learn about job and internship opportunities with the foreign service at the Tri-Mission in Brussels.<\/li>\n
  11. Interested students can learn about teaching assistant positions and young scholar grants at the Fulbright Commission of Belgium and Luxembourg.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \nHS-376 INTL (Spain: Brink of New Worlds), Spain - Dr. Michael De Gruccio<\/b><\/p>\n

    Through a three-week adventure in the Iberian Peninsula, students will explore the historical and cultural landscapes of Spain and its connection to the making of the world. Situated at the far edge of the ancient Roman Empire and what is now Europe, and destined by geography to play a central role in the contact and exchange between the Old World of Europe and the New World of the Americas, Spain is an incredibly rich place to understand how the world connects. Students will read historical texts and primary sources to prepare them for the exploration of la tierra encantada (the enchanted earth) that is Spain. Our small cohort of students will visit and analyze various places and events, from olive groves, to flamenco concerts, to castles, to many holy sites and museums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
