Global Journalism Trip to Vietnam

Professor Ernabel Demillo led a global journalism trip to Vietnam during the winter break, along with her co-faculty leader Georgia Kral. During the trip students met and interviewed David Clark and Rich Allen, two American Vietnam veterans who live in Vietnam and volunteer for Veterans for Peace in Da Nang. Clark and his wife Ushi, arranged a tour of the Da Nang Association of Agent Orange/Dioxin (DAVA), one of many centers in Vietnam providing care, education and rehabilitation for victims of Agent Orange.

The Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange (VAVA) students gave a dance performance and the �鶹��Ƶ’s students spent time talking and playing with the kids. This was the highlight of the trip for many of the students. The �鶹��Ƶ’s group also presented Colonel To Nam, director of DAVA/VAVA, a donation, which is pictured here.

Communications and Journalism Students Visit ABC Studio

Ernabel Demillo, lecturer of communication and head of the journalism minor, recently took a group of communication and journalism students to the ABC daytime talk show, Strahan, Sarah and Keke. The show is filmed at ABC’s Times Square studio. Students were given VIP treatment and were able to speak with and take photos with Michael Strahan, Keke Palmer and Sara Haines. The segment airs this week on ABC.

Assistant Professor Moderates Panel at International Literature Festival

Fatima Shaik, assistant professor in the department of communication and media culture, moderated a panel at the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature in New York City on April 21. The panel was titled, “What Shall We Tell the Children?” and featured four award winning writers and illustrators. .

Gabriella Robles ’18 Awarded CUNY Fellowship

Gabriella Robles ’18 (English major and journalism minor) is one of this year’s recipients of the highly competitive Knight/CUNY-Journalism Fellowship. The program is designed to address underrepresentation in newsrooms in the United States. The summer fellowship/internship program includes tuition, room and board, transportation and a paid internship during the summer. At the end of the program, five students will be awarded a full scholarship to pursue their master’s degree at the CUNY Journalism School in New York City.

Integrated Marketing Executive for FDA Campaign Talks to Marketing Communications Students

Adelia “Dee Dee” Faison Moore, associate director, events and partnerships, for Initiative, a marketing communications agency within the Interpublic network of companies, spoke to Adjunct Professor Kimberley Norsworthy’s marketing communications class. Moore talked to students about cause and mission related marketing and the intricacies of the FDA’s Fresh Empire campaign, which she oversees.

Fresh Empire is the FDA’s first public education program designed to prevent tobacco use among at-risk, multicultural youth. Moore works with the FDA to activate more than 500 Fresh Empire events around the country. �鶹��Ƶ’s University marketing communications students learned how these events are planned and executed.

Journalism students to see a live taping of Emmy-nominated show HARRY

Journalism Professor Ernabel Demillo took a group of journalism students to see a live taping of the Emmy-nominated show HARRY, hosted by Harry Connick Jr. at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York. Students got to see first hand how a live television show comes together. Connick’s special guests included actors Kurt Russell and Zach Woods (Silicon Valley, The Office) and child actress McKenna Grace. The students can be seen on TV April 21 and May 16!

Student Receives This Year’s Golden Door International Film Festival Scholarship

Journalism professor Ernabel Demillo presented Gabriella Robles ’18, an English major and a journalism minor, with this year’s Golden Door International Film Festival $1000 Scholarship for an outstanding college student in the visual/media arts. The scholarship is funded by Michelle and Bill Sorvino, organizers of the annual Golden Door International Film Festival of Jersey City, voted the Number 1 film festival in New Jersey.

Yvette Noel Schure, Beyoncé’s publicist, spoke to students about her experience in media. Along with Beyoncé, Schure has run press campaigns for major music artists including Prince, John Legend and many others.

Students Go Behind the Scenes at Walt Disney World Over Spring Break

This March, students taking “Disney: Behind the Scenes” in the department of communication and media culture were able to do just that–go behind the scenes at Walt Disney World. Fourteen students accompanied by Cynthia W. Walker, Ph.D., associate professor and chair, Barna Donovan, Ph.D., associate professor, and data science graduate student, Chris Walker ’18, spent a week exploring WDW’s four major parks in Orlando, Fla. They attended classes about leadership, teamwork and the culture of excellence, explored the utilidors, the tunnels running underneath the Magic Kingdom and wandered through the rows and rows of micro-chipped costumes waiting for employees at Epcot. They also saw the special events room at the Living Seas, spoke with a staff member of Imagineering and competed in a scavenger hunt.

Asian American Life, Hosted by Communications Professor is Nominated for an Emmy
